The Lion and the Rat: A Fable by La Fontaine.
(Oxford University Press, 1963)
This big book is an excellent format for Wildsmith's large and colorful work. There are several good illustrations--of the lion hunting and of the animals rushing to see--but I do not find the quality of the art sustained. ...
The North Wind and the Sun: A Fable by La Fontaine.
(Oxford University Press, 1964)
Even the paperback is a beautiful book in this case! See my comments on the original hardbound edition under 1964.
Dame Cigale et Dame Fourmi
(Kenworthy Educational Service, 1970)
Very pleasant little sideways pamphlet. The series' purpose is to learn by having fun. The presentation and version both help to that end. The figures are lively. The best may be 14's image of the cricket washing clothes ...
The Hare and the Tortoise
(Oxford University Press, 1982)
Lively pictures in the Wildsmith style. The story is much expanded (from La Fontaine even?): the fox and the owl debate, and the rooster starts the race. I could well use a picture or two from this edition in a lecture.
The North Wind and the Sun: A Fable by La Fontaine
(Franklin Watts, 1964)
A beautiful book in excellent condition. Wildsmith's best illustrations of the three books of his that I have. The question of the bet is Let's both try [to] blow it off his back. What nonsense! Complete with an ...
The Hare and the Tortoise (Japanese)
(Rakuda Shuppan Dezain, 1969)
Here is the Japanese version of Wildsmith's work, originally published by Oxford University Press in 1966. The bibliographical data here notes that original publication and seems to indicate a publication date of 1969 for ...
The Rich Man and the Shoe-maker: A Fable by La Fontaine.
(Franklin Watts, 1966)
See the original publication of this book by Oxford University Press in 1965 and my comments there. These copies belonged to a library and received extensive use. Some pages have been torn and wrinkled. I will keep both ...
The Rich Man and the Shoe-maker: A Fable by La Fontaine.
(Oxford Univ. Pr.Oxford University Press, 1965)
A beautiful large-format hardbound book in excellent condition. The version used here departs significantly from LaFontaine's text. This version adds--and puts special emphasis on--the children who come out to listen to ...
The North Wind and the Sun: A Fable by La Fontaine.
(Oxford University Press, 1964)
This book differs from the original hardbound version in lacking a dust jacket. What was the dust jacket there has now become the cover here. The publisher has changed from Franklin Watts to Oxford, the place of publication ...
The Lion and the Rat: A Fable by La Fontaine
(Franklin Watts, 1963)
I presumed that I already had a copy of this book but could use a good copy. To my surprise, I have two unusual copies -- a library binding and a paperback -- but not a normal copy. This book was first sold by I. Magnin, ...
